Worked examples

Each month the examples are picked from calculations for city centres so that every option is shown where it leaves the most wealth. The figures come from the same calculation as the comparison above.

Across 99 calculations (11 city centres, studios, one-bedroom and larger flats, 5, 10 and 20 years) the most wealth is left by right of occupancy in 60, buying in 39 and renting in none. Renting leaves the most wealth only if maintenance charges rise two percentage points a year faster than assumed (12 calculations). Of the assumptions, the growth of home prices matters most: in the examples a change of two percentage points a year moves the gap between buying and renting by €31,500 on average.
